Principle-Based Leadership Centered on Values

Leadership principles aren’t just theoretical; they have a practical impact. This impact can be either positive or negative to those we lead and the organization that we are a part of. That’s why I believe that leading with principles is a good leadership practice that many effective leaders should consider. This form of leadership is often referred to as principle-based leadership, but some may call it values-based leadership. While this leadership style has been around for many years, it is not often referenced in texts discussing leadership styles.

Principle-Based Leadership is centered around a set of guiding principles that help shape actions, behaviors and decisions. These principles act as a compass for individuals and help ensure that their decisions are ethical and aligned with their values. The key motivation behind this is authenticity, ethics and shared values. When leaders fall into this leadership style, they align decisions and behavior with core values while building trust and purpose. Much like transformation leaders, principle-based leaders step back to see the bigger picture to balance the needs of employees, stakeholders and those they are serving.

From my personal experience, this leadership style is best when paired with another style such as servant leadership or transformational leadership. While remaining true to one’s values, they are also able to serve, inspire and motivate team members by these other leadership styles. As you think about your leadership style, ask yourself if you are staying true to your values.
