Good Leadership Matters
Leadership makes a difference in the success of organizations and communities. Having great leadership can also be the catalyst for a positive and high energy workplace.
In the award-winning movie, “Remember the Titans" two communities, one black and one white, were forced to come together. The movie is based on the true story of the 1971 Virginia State football champions from T. C. Williams High School. The mandated new school zones combined students from two very diverse communities. With the new structure, there would be a combined new football team. The two previous teams had limited knowledge and respect for each other. Coach Herman Boone was given the tall task of creating a winning football team. Coach Boone provided focused and patient leadership. He emphasized the significance of the word team.
At the point Coach Boone was able to convince both groups to trust and have faith in each other, great things happened. The new combined team went on to become state football champions and brought the larger community together in the process. Coach Boone was a leader with vision and courage. Leaders like Coach Boone take the impossible and create a culture that brings about success. As leaders, we must keep in mind four keys toward leadership success:
- Trust your ability to lead the team to greatness. Your preparation has built you for the success you desire with your team.
- Treasure the opportunity to serve in leadership. Celebrate the team often and remember, public service is not a burden but a privilege.
- Treat your team with dignity and respect. Every person on the team brings value and should be listened to and encouraged to reach their full potential.
- Ensure the team has access to the best training and professional development. The customer deserves the highest quality of service with every interaction.
T.C. Willams High School was officially renamed Alexandria City High School in 2021. The school continues to focus on inclusion and community connection. The leadership of Coach Herman Boone in 1971 planted a seed that continues to flourish over a half century later.
