Executive Director Selected for UT Center for Local Planning
The Institute for Public Service has named Josh Suddath, director of planning and engineering for Sumner County, as the executive director of the new Center for Local Planning. Suddath will start his new role on Monday, Oct. 13.
He has served as the director of planning and engineering since 2018 and he previously served as assistant town administrator for the town of Collierville. He received his bachelor’s degree in history and his master’s in public administration, planning and economic development, both from East Tennessee State University.
“We’re delighted that Josh will serve as the first executive director for the new center,” said IPS Vice President Dr. Herb Byrd. “In addition to his background, knowledge of local panning, and vision for the center, his leadership abilities make him a valuable addition to the Institute for Public Service.”
The state designated recurring funding to establish a dedicated local planning function, assisting Tennessee’s cities and counties with economic development, zoning and infrastructure planning. Suddath will be based in Middle Tennessee, while the center will employ planners in each of the state’s three grand divisions.
"I'm honored to join Dr. Byrd and the UT IPS team in continuing their mission of making life better for Tennesseans,” Suddath said. “The Center for Local Planning will play a pivotal role in working with local communities to ensure that the unique character of our state is preserved as it continues to be the location of choice for people, business and industry from all over the country and world. I am excited to be a part of this visionary effort."
The planning agency will join the institute’s existing six agencies and one initiative that provide training and consulting to state and local governments, manufacturers and law enforcement. The funding will also allow UT Extension, a branch of the UT Institute of Agriculture, to offer a statewide landowner education program.
